DEMAND FILED FOR PROGRAMMATIC ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR EXPANDED PRODUCTION OF PLUTONIUM PITS FOR NUCLEAR WEAPONS

On behalf of our clients, Nuclear Watch New Mexico, Savannah River Site Watch, and Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment, and along with the Natural Resources Defense Council, today we sent a letter demanding a thorough environmental analysis of a plan to produce nuclear weapons components in New Mexico and South Carolina. The Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration have proposed to dramatically expand production of plutonium pits, which are the cores of nuclear weapons, at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Savannah River Site. Because Los Alamos has serious and ongoing nuclear safety issues, and because the agencies propose to produce plutonium pits at the Savannah River Site using a facility that was never designed for this purpose, that is still incomplete, and that has been the subject of construction fraud, these plans pose dire risks to the public and the environment. Accordingly, our letter demands that the agencies address these safety and environmental issues by preparing a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement.
