Lawsuit Filed To Protect Wild Horses From Sterilization

To kick off the New Year, we filed a lawsuit to rein in the Bureau of Land Management’s (“BLM’s”) plan to sterilize an entire herd of wild horses in Idaho. For years, the BLM has tried to sterilize members of wild horse herds in other states, and for years, our litigation has prevented this from happening. Now, the BLM plans to sterilize an entire wild horse herd, and our lawsuit again aims to guard the wild horses from this traumatic action, which would fundamentally change the herd’s behavior and character, destroying the very traits that make wild horses wild. In particular, our litigation raises challenges under the National Environmental Policy Act and the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, arguing that the BLM made its plan without fully considering its environmental impacts or a proper range of alternatives. Our clients include the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, the Cloud Foundation, Return to Freedom, and Virginia Hudson.  A copy of the Complaint is here.
