DC Initiative:
We won a
series of lawsuits on behalf of the Service Employees International
Union against the trade association for DC commercial realtors,
regarding SEIU's effort to present DC voters with a ballot initiative
that provides public scrutiny of the real property tax assessment
process. The Initiative was then overwhelmingly approved by the
citizens of the District.

State Trapping
Initiative Cases: We
represent a coalition of animal protection organizations in three
cases involving citizen initiatives to ban the use of certain cruel
and indiscriminate trapping and poisoning methods in the States
of California and Washington. In both cases, we intervened on behalf
of the sponsors of the initiatives and worked with the State Attorney
General Offices in their efforts to defend the voters' decisions
to eliminate inhumane wildlife trapping. The U.S. Court of Appeals
for the 9th Circuit rejected, on standing grounds, the trappers
challenge to the California initiative. The Washington Supreme Court
rejected, on state law grounds, the challenge to the Washington
initiative.
